Wild Yam (Dioscorea villosa) is a root long used in traditional herbal medicine, most often associated with women's health formulas — but it also appears in men's blends, largely for its steroidal compound content.

Wild Yam root and bulb contain diosgenin, a plant-based steroidal saponin, along with other compounds like dioscin, alkaloids, tannins, and phytosterols. Diosgenin can be used industrially as a starting material for synthesizing steroid hormones in a lab — which is part of where Wild Yam's hormone-related reputation comes from.
An Important Clarification
It's worth being precise here: Wild Yam itself does not contain estrogen, progesterone, or DHEA, and there is no good evidence that the human body can convert diosgenin into these hormones on its own. That conversion only happens through laboratory processing. So while Wild Yam is often marketed as a "natural hormone" ingredient, the science doesn't support it directly raising hormone levels in the body the way a lab-synthesized hormone would.
What Research Does Show
Evidence for Wild Yam's traditional uses — including menstrual cramp relief and menopausal symptom support — is limited and mixed across small studies using different species and extract types. Separately, some small studies on diosgenin-rich yam extract have suggested modest improvements in cognitive function and lipid profiles, but this is early-stage research, not an established, well-replicated finding.
