Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) is a root native to Southeast Asia with centuries of traditional use as a daily energy and stress tonic across Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. It's the ingredient HorseWood leads with, and it has more modern human research behind it than most botanicals in this category.
What the Research Actually Found
A randomized, placebo-controlled trial published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition (Talbott et al., 2013) looked at a standardized Tongkat Ali extract in moderately stressed adults over 4 weeks. The supplemented group showed a significant reduction in the stress hormone cortisol along with improvements in tension and mood scores compared to placebo — a reasonable evidence base for the "stress and energy" reputation, even though it's one study in a specific population.
Separately, a study in Andrologia (Tambi et al., 2012) looked at a standardized Tongkat Ali extract in men with late-onset hypogonadism (age-related low testosterone) and found increases in testosterone levels alongside improvements in quality-of-life and sexual health questionnaire scores over the treatment period.
How This Applies to Energy and Recovery
Chronic stress is closely linked to persistent fatigue — elevated cortisol over time can disrupt sleep and leave you feeling drained even after rest. Tongkat Ali's best-documented mechanism is supporting a healthier stress-hormone response, which is a reasonable, honest way to frame its role in an energy-focused formula: not a stimulant, but a traditional adaptogen-style botanical.
What the Evidence Doesn't Show
These are still a small number of trials, several sponsored by ingredient suppliers, and none test the finished HorseWood formula itself. Individual results with any botanical vary, and Tongkat Ali is not a substitute for addressing sleep, diet, or medical causes of fatigue.

Tongkat Ali has both centuries of traditional use and a small but real modern research base pointing to stress-hormone and testosterone support — a legitimate, if modest, foundation for its role in an energy and recovery formula.
